Derbyshire Dales Local Plan 2026-2042

Derbyshire Dales District Council recently consulted upon the Derbyshire Dales Local Plan which sets out the overall vision, objectives, and polices for the future development of the district outside the National Park for the period up to 2042.

The consultation closed on Monday 14th September 2026 and we now await updates on the outcomes from this. The Council will consider the representations received and how to respond to them before the Local Plan can be submitted to the Secretary of State in December 2026.

More information including frequently asked questions is also available on the District Council’s Local Plan web pages:

Local Government Re-Organisation

The government is simplifying how Councils operate in Derby and Derbyshire, by creating two unitary authorities to replace the current ten. Services provided by town and parish councils will remain unchanged. The aim is to create a simpler and more efficient system, saving money and placing services for the local area under these two authorities, rather than dividing them across multiple Councils.

In July 2026, the government decided that there will be two unitary authorities – North and South Derbyshire. The split will put Bolsover DC, Chesterfield BC, Derbyshire Dales DC, High Peak BC and parts of Amber Valley in the North, while the South will be made up of Derby City Council, Erewash BC, South Derbyshire DC, and parts of Amber Valley BC.

We understand that Amber Valley will be split as follows:

North – Heanor and Loscoe, Hazelwood, Shottle and Postern, Idridgehay and Alton, Ashleyhay, Alderwasley, Ripley, Codnor, Aldercar and Langley Mill, Ironville, Riddings, Ravensdale Park, Turnditch and Windley, Somercotes, Alfreton, Swanwick, Pentrich, South Wingfield, Crich, Dethick, Lea, and Holloway, Weston Underwood.

South – Belper, Denby, Kilburn, Kirk Langley, Shipley, Mackworth, Kedleston, Quarndon, Duffield, Holbrook, Horsley, Horsley Woodhouse, Smalley and Mapperley.

Here’s what’s happening next:

May 2027 – elections for new unitary councils across the country take place and will be set up in ‘shadow’ form.
1 April 2028 – new unitary councils become operational.

Please note, as of September 2026, the Local Government Reorganisation for Derbyshire, and several other areas across the country, has been paused. This is part of a national review to ensure that the decision making process is robust and legally secure, and also to ensure that the proposed reorganisation aligns with the Government’s upcoming Devolution White Paper.

Planning

In May 2025, Ballidon quarry submitted a planning application for a dewatering pipeline. Ballidon and Bradbourne Parish Council objected to this application.

As of September 2026, this application is still currently under assessment. You may view the application here: PDNPA_PL_CONSULTATION_LET NP_DDD_0125_0066 14_05_2025 10_19_20__ 13238
